What is your role & how long have you been with Layer 2 Computers?
Currently I serve as Lead Technology Specialist with Layer 2 Computers, I started in 2019 and it's been a blast!
What inspired you to pursue a career in tech support?
Throughout High School and my teenage years I had a passion for Technology, building computers, and interconnected networks of all types. I tried a few other career paths along my journey but ultimately decided to return and do something I was passionate about. They say follow your passion and you'll never work a day in your life. I'm happy and enjoy every day at work, even the stressful ones. Never looking back!
Are there any memorable moments or experiences from your career that you'd like to share?
Oh, with a lead like David there are many. David has a big heart and often times that can come with a touch of chaos! Installs where tools have been unintentionally dropped down interior walls to never been seen again, oops! We always have fun. There's a picture of us doing a rack rewire where I'm trapped inside looking like a goblin as we try to transform the equipment. Me being 6'5" and stuck in a tiny rack and David up on a ladder outside (him being the short one of course) was just comical. We still laugh about it!
How do you stay up-to-date with the constant advancements in the tech field?
I catch things through the traditional news outlets, and various online fora. Usually this comes to be while researching problems that come up with our clientelle. Sometimes it's a known issue, and at other times we're stumped for days for an answer.
Do you have any favorite tools or software that you use at work?
We use a variety of tools (including most importantly our minds) to diagnose and toubleshoot. Tools make the FIX usually easier to accomplish, but being able to intune and figure out the exact problem from various symptoms is where I tend to shine. Even if our client can't exactly show or replicate the problem, I can usually understand what they're describing even if it isn't "Tech speak".Â
Tell us about life outside of work
Currently I reside in quiet Germantown with my two cats, Sylvester and Rosslyn. They tend to keep me on my toes and greet me at the door after a stressful day of onsites. Sylvester is always the eager to sit on my keyboard or bump my nose while trying to talk to a client. It's worth it though. I grew up in Bellbrook, and have family in Kettering.
What are some of your hobbies or interests outside of work?
I maintain a pretty vast library of books, on varying subjects from Fantasy/Sci-fi novels, to History and Religious studies. While not religious myself, I'm agnostic to the idea and do anjoy a varying degree of philosophies. At the moment I'm reading some books on Stoicism. I also enjoy collecting and using Fountain pens. Lover of Owls and they myriad symbolism and life lessons. Lastly, I'm a member of the IOOF, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
What's your favorite travel destination or dream vacation spot?
Last vacation was to Scotland and I would love to have a residence there some day. I also wish to visit other European countries - France, Germany, Norway, Ireland. I'm also planning another solo trip to Scotland again because it's ruggedly beautiful, and just amazing people.
Are there any books, movies, or TV shows you're currently enjoying or recommend?
I enjoy NCIS on the Television when I do watch, anything mystery related is fun. Midsommer Murders is a British show that I also enjoy. Books -- Anything by Anne Rice, Storm Constantine, for something lighter the Dresden Files are always a good read.
Is there anything else you'd like to share with our audience, whether it's a fun fact, a favorite quote, or a simple message?
Friendship may, and often does, grow into love, but love never subsides into friendship. --Lord Byron
