Recently, we tackled an interesting challenge involving a firewall that was damaged by an electrical surge. Early one morning, we received reports that some users were having trouble connecting to the internet and their VOIP services. It was a bit puzzling because not everyone was affected—some were online without any issues while others couldn’t connect. We quickly jumped in, got everyone reconnected, and thought we had fixed the problem.
But by the afternoon, the same issue cropped up again. This time, the inconsistency was even more noticeable, with some users experiencing connectivity while others still struggled. It became clear that our initial fix wasn’t holding, so we dug in for a deeper investigation.
As we looked closer, we discovered that the real culprit was the firewall. For those who might not be familiar, a firewall acts as a security guard for your network, managing and monitoring internet traffic to ensure everything runs smoothly and securely. In this case, the electrical surge had damaged the firewall. It would boot up and seem fine initially, but then it would crash intermittently, causing sporadic connectivity issues.
Once we identified the problem, we replaced the faulty firewall with a new one. With the new equipment in place, everything went back to normal, and the connectivity issues were resolved.
